CyberArk vs. BeyondTrust vs. Delinea: Notes From an Admin

I've run all three PAM platforms in production. Here's where each one shines, where each one hurts, and how I'd choose between them.

  1. CyberArk vs. BeyondTrust vs. Delinea at a glance
  2. CyberArk Privileged Access Manager (PAM)
  3. BeyondTrust Password Safe
  4. Delinea Secret Server
  5. CyberArk vs. BeyondTrust vs. Delinea: my takeaways

I’ve run CyberArk Privileged Access Manager (PAM), BeyondTrust Password Safe, and Delinea Secret Server in production. The short version: CyberArk is the deepest and most demanding, BeyondTrust gives up a little depth for a much easier admin experience, and Delinea is the fastest to stand up and the simplest to live with.

Which one fits depends on your organization’s size, complexity, and security requirements. Here’s what I’ve seen with each.

CyberArk vs. BeyondTrust vs. Delinea at a glance

CyberArk PAM BeyondTrust Password Safe Delinea Secret Server
Best for Large enterprises with complex requirements and a dedicated PAM team Teams that want strong security without a steep learning curve Small and mid-sized businesses, or anyone who wants simple and scalable
Organized around Privileged accounts Assets and the accounts on them Secrets, in folders
Time to value (my deployments) Weeks of configuration Fast, thanks to discovery Days
Standout Session recording and behavioral analytics Discovery, automation and an easy admin UI Simplicity and secrets for cloud and DevOps
Trade-off Complexity and the people to run it Less session granularity than CyberArk No advanced session recording or behavioral analytics

CyberArk Privileged Access Manager (PAM)

CyberArk is built for large, complicated environments with strict security requirements. It gives you a lot of control over privileged accounts, and it expects you to use all of it.

The feature I came to value most was session monitoring and recording. We could track and log every privileged session, and with behavioral analytics on top, we knew that if a problem came up we’d have detailed records to assess and address the risk.

My real-world experience with CyberArk

In one environment I oversaw, we had thousands of privileged accounts spread across servers, databases, and network devices. CyberArk centralized credential management and enforced strict password policies. It rotated passwords automatically after each use, which cut the risk of credential theft considerably.

It is not a simple system, and learning it took real effort. Once you understand it and configure it well, though, your team can fit it to your organization’s requirements, write tailored rules, and track every privileged account closely.

CyberArk also does advanced threat analytics. It goes past account management to analyze behavior and flag anomalies like atypical login patterns or privilege escalation attempts. I found that essential for spotting potential insider threats and compromised accounts. Getting that level of detection set up, however, took considerable time and a thorough understanding of the platform.

CyberArk PAM makes the most sense for large enterprises with complicated infrastructure and rigorous security needs. Just plan on dedicated people to get full value out of it.

BeyondTrust Password Safe

Coming from CyberArk, I found BeyondTrust Password Safe practical and efficient. It focuses on managing assets rather than accounts, and the interface is intuitive enough that admins who weren’t deeply familiar with PAM picked it up quickly.

My experience with BeyondTrust in practice

I’ve implemented BeyondTrust Password Safe at several mid-sized companies and at one of the largest healthcare organizations. The discovery features stood out first. It finds the privileged accounts on every asset, human and machine, so you can enforce password policies wherever you need to. That cut the time my team spent on initial setup.

Its session management is effective. It doesn’t seem to have the same granularity or real-time monitoring as CyberArk, but it was more than adequate in the deployments I’ve been involved with. Once set up, it captures and records privileged sessions automatically, and my team could review logs and stay compliant without the data overload I ran into with CyberArk.

The automation is good, too. Password rotation and policy enforcement are streamlined, which cuts the manual work of password management and keeps credentials current without someone watching them all the time.

If you want strong security that’s easier to run, at a lower cost than CyberArk, BeyondTrust Password Safe is a top option. It doesn’t demand the same technical depth, and it still protects privileged accounts well.

Delinea Secret Server

Of the PAM platforms I’ve worked with, Delinea Secret Server (formerly Thycotic) is the simplest and quickest to deploy. It was operational in a matter of days, where CyberArk often took weeks of configuration.

My experience with Delinea’s simplicity

I’ve deployed Delinea Secret Server a few times, for organizations managing secrets across databases, cloud environments, and DevOps tools. It handles everything from passwords to API keys and certificates. The vault was straightforward to set up, and its access controls made it easy to ensure only explicitly authorized users could retrieve sensitive credentials.

Customization was another strength. My admin team adapted policies and workflows to the organization’s requirements without getting buried in complexity. We automated password rotation, integrated with DevOps pipelines, and scaled as the company grew.

Usability is where Delinea really wins. The interface is straightforward and the workflows make sense, so you don’t need extensive training or advanced technical skills to run it. That makes it a fit for small and mid-sized businesses, and for larger enterprises that want something simple and scalable.

Delinea Secret Server lacks the advanced session recording and behavioral analytics of CyberArk and BeyondTrust. For most organizations managing privileged credentials, it still covers what they actually need, without the overhead of a heavier platform.

CyberArk vs. BeyondTrust vs. Delinea: my takeaways

CyberArk vs. BeyondTrust: pick CyberArk when you need the deepest session monitoring and analytics and have the team to run it. Pick BeyondTrust when you want most of that protection with far less effort to administer. CyberArk vs. Delinea: CyberArk is the heavyweight and Delinea the fastest to stand up, so it comes down to how much complexity you can staff. BeyondTrust vs. Delinea: both are approachable, and BeyondTrust brings session management that Delinea doesn’t match.

CyberArk PAM is the choice for larger enterprises with complicated security requirements and the capacity to run a sophisticated platform. Its security and monitoring capabilities are unmatched, but the complexity can be a lot for companies that don’t need that level of detail.

BeyondTrust Password Safe manages assets and the accounts on them, and it balances ease of use with strong security. It’s simpler than CyberArk and still gives you solid password management, automation, and session tracking without a steep learning curve.

Delinea Secret Server organizes secrets in folders and is the easy option for managing privileged accounts. The simple folder structure suits small and mid-sized businesses, and larger organizations that want to scale without complicated configuration.

There’s no universal winner. Your size, your security needs, and how many people you can dedicate to the platform should drive the decision. Each of these tools is the right answer for someone. The expensive mistake is buying the one built for a different organization than yours.
